Online video editing is the process of uploading or connecting footage to a web application and editing it through a browser or cloud-connected interface. Depending on the product, the processing happens on your device, in the cloud, or both.
The distinction most product pages blur: "online" describes how the editor is accessed. It does not tell you how much of the edit is manual, AI-assisted or automated. A browser-based editor can be an entirely manual timeline, a single automated function, or a system that assembles a complete first version from your takes. Same access model, three different products.
The rest follows from that separation. Online editors are not automatically faster, safer, simpler or more collaborative than desktop software; they are differently distributed, with real advantages (access, updates, remote processing) and real trade-offs (upload time, connection dependence, less frame-level control). Which side wins depends on the project, not the category.
